چکیده

It is currently accepted that Hot-Bottom-Burning (HBB) in intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars prevents the formation of C stars. Nevertheless, we present the results of some detailed evolutionary calculations which show that even with HBB we obtain C stars at the highest luminosities reached on the AGB. This is due to mass-loss reducing the envelope mass so that HBB ceases but dredge-up continues. The high mass-loss rate produces an optically thick wind before the star reaches C/O> 1. This is consistent with the recent results of van Loon et al. (1997a,b) who find obscured C stars in the Magellanic Clouds at luminosities up to Mbol = 6:8.

First Hubble Space Telescope Observations of the Brightest Stars in the Virgo Galaxy

As part of both the Early Release Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Key ProjeCt on the Extragalactic Distance Scale, we have obtained multiwavelength BVR WFPC2 images for the face-on Virgo cluster spiral galaxy M100 = NGC 4321. We report here preliminary results from those observations, in the form of a color-magnitude diagram for -11,500 stars down to V 27 mag and a luminosi...

A Technique for Ultrahigh-Precision CCD Photometry

We present techniques for wide-field ultrahigh-precision time-sampled CCD photometry. Representing a survey of field stars, our data consist of UBVRI photometry and a V-band time series of exposures on 5 consecutive nights covering 11,500 stars in a ∼1 deg field. The resulting light curves reach precisions of 0.0020 mag per exposure in the brightest stars ( ). Light curves binned and averaged o...

Towards Locating the Brightest Microlensing Events on the Sky

It is estimated that a star brighter than visual magnitude 17 is undergoing a detectable gravitational microlensing event, somewhere on the sky, at any given time. It is assumed that both lenses and sources are normal stars drawn from a standard Bahcall-Soneira model of our Galaxy. Furthermore, over the time scale of a year, a star 15th magnitude or brighter should undergo a detectable gravitat...

داده‌کاهی و آنالیز تصاویر چند باندی نوری بلازار 180 Mrk

Nearly simultaneous multiband monitoring of blazars is very limited and most studies reported in literature are conflicting, too. Although optical variability on intra-night timescales is now a well established phenomenon for blazars, its relationship to long-term variability remains unclear. Possible clues could come from monitoring the optical spectrum for correlation with brightness. The pr...

Helium Sedimentation and the Uv Upturn in the Brightest Cluster Galaxies

Recent observations with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) show strong unexpected UV excess in the spectrum of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). It is believed that the excess UV signal is produced by old and evolved core-He burning stars, and the UV flux strength could be greatly enhanced if the progenitor stars have high value of He abundance. In this work, we propose that sedimentation proc...
